Before deciding to build a birdfeeder it is important to know that birds do not need anything fancy. For years they have survived without our help and without anything special and will continue to do so whether we choose to provide them with feed and a special feeder or not.

It is true, however, that once you begin feeding birds you must make a commitment to continue to do so. Once birds begin to rely on you for a food supply they will continue to do so, especially in winter months.

There are many simple solutions to feeding birds. You can place feed out on a stump or porch in an old pie tin or put some suet in an old mesh onion bag and tie it to a branch.

The following are instructions for making a basic platform birdfeeder. You will need:

1 12"x14" piece of 3/4" plywood

2 1"x14" strips of wood

1 1"x11" strip of wood

1 1"x10" strip of wood

1 4' piece of landscaping tie or other pole.

Directions: With wood screws, attach the two 1"x14" strips of wood to top edges of plywood. Attach the 1"x11" strip to one top side of feeder, and then the 1"x10" strip to the other top side. The gap left between the top side piece and end piece will allow excess water to flow off.

Using at least two wood screws, screw platform to one end of landscaping tie (or pole) and then secure pole into the ground. Remember to place your feeder somewhat near cover for birds (around 10' is a suitable distance), and keep it away from areas where predators such as cats can hide in waiting. After rains or high moisture, be sure to clean it and put out fresh seed, as excess moisture can cause mold which can be harmful to birds.

This birdfeeder may be simple and common, but there will be nothing common about the beauty that will soon be feeding on a regular basis in your own backyard.
